How I Built My Portfolio Site (And Why Standard Templates Fail)

When building a web presence for your business, it’s easy to default to standard site builders or templates. But standard templates often fail to stand out, load slowly, and lack the custom UX that drives client conversions. Here is why and how I designed my site from scratch.

1. The Visual Approach: HOTTAT Architecture

The design system of this website is inspired by modern editorial architectural websites. We use a warm off-white background (#F9F9F6) rather than pure clinical white or harsh dark themes. Clean, thin structural border lines divide sections, offering visual structure without resorting to heavy shadow styling or colorful dividers.

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” — Herbert Simon

2. Designing for Conversions

To convert trades contractors and childcare operators in Edmonton, the site doesn’t just rely on pretty photos. It features a custom Project Cost Estimator tool that lets clients estimate design costs transparently, and a direct Stripe Checkout Integration to make deposit payments painless. This builds instant trust.
